Expansion of the Archand mechanical ventilation station
Project summary
The Arcand mechanical ventilation station (MVS), located on Arcand Street at the corner of Sherbrooke Street, will be modernized: it will be enlarged and its equipment brought up to current standards.
Work will start on April 22, 2025.
The expansion and upgrading work will make it possible to :
• A ventilation station equipped with more efficient silencers, in compliance with the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough's noise bylaw.
• More efficient tunnel ventilation.
• Architecture that blends seamlessly into the neighbourhood, with a decorative concrete exterior finish.
Duration of the work: April 2025 to summer 2027

Impact on local residents
Work schedule
In accordance with the schedule authorized by current municipal regulations:
- Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
- Work may occasionally continue on Saturdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. In such cases, you will be notified by electronic bulletin.
- Night work will be carried out occasionally inside the metro tunnel, outside metro operating hours. This work should generate a limited level of noise, as it will be carried out inside the tunnel.
Noise management
The following mitigation measures will be put in place to reduce noise from the worksite, in order to limit the impact on the surrounding area:
- Surrounding the site with fixed temporary noise barriers at least 3 metres high;
- Develop and implement a noise management program to ensure that activities comply with authorized noise levels;
- Use electrical equipment, where available, to reduce noise at source;
- Use vehicles or machinery with variable-intensity back-up alarms;
- In addition, noise monitoring will be carried out.
Dust management
- A site fence equipped with a privacy net will be installed at the site entrance;
- Watering will be used during demolition work to reduce dust to the ground;
- Access roads will be cleaned during the work.
Traffic and parking around the worksite
- The intersection of Arcand and Sherbrooke streets will be closed to vehicular traffic. Motorists will have to use Robert-Jurie or Jean-Lecompte streets to park on Arcand;
- Traffic will continue to flow in both directions on Arcand Street.
An information session took place on March 26, 2025.
Learn more about the project
A mechanical ventilation station is an infrastructure that is equipped with two fans designed to extract hot air from the métro network through inlets fitted with air vents. Huge noise suppressors mitigate the noise from these fans to ensure quiet for residents living close to a ventilation station.
Mechanical ventilation stations serve three essential purposes:
- Comfort ventilation: regulates the ambient temperature and supplies fresh air for transit users by exchanging air from the outside with air inside the métro network.
- Night-time ventilation: ensures a supply of fresh air for night workers carrying out routine maintenance.
- Emergency ventilation: in the event of an incident, controls smoke and provides a safe evacuation route for passengers via the nearest métro station and ensures unobstructed access for emergency first responders.
