For parents, by parents
Poussette et astuces en autobus!

Montreal, May 20, 2008Earlier today, Société de transport de Montréal (STM) chairman, Claude Trudel, and Initiative 1, 2, 3 GO! Pointe de l’Île president, Jacynthe Tremblay, presented a new booklet, Poussette et astuces en autobus! (tips for strollers on buses), a guide for parents who use public transportation.

“The result of a concerted effort by the community, this guidebook addresses the access-to-bus concerns expressed as much by transit users with strollers as by other commuters travelling alongside them. In fact, the STM will make it possible for its clients to obtain a copy of Poussette et astuces en autobus! at its Customer Service Centre, located at Berri-UQAM métro station,” declared Mr. Trudel.

“This is a perfect opportunity to announce the start of a new STM pilot project involving the use of strollers aboard low-floor buses,” added the STM chairman. “Scheduled to begin next June 23, this project will be piloted by the Mont-Royal bus centre, that will provide service on eleven bus routes. It consists of designating a place aboard the bus for parents travelling with a stroller. Identified by a pictogram, the reserved place has the advantage of being safer and keeping the aisle clear. This place is also used for wheelchair users, who still enjoy priority regarding its use. Moreover, an awareness campaign will soon begin in support of the pilot project to encourage passengers to adopt the proposed practices. Indeed, each and everyone of us should be more understanding and cooperate when a stroller or wheelchair is aboard the bus.”

In touch with family realities, as the mother of three young boys herself, Jacynthe Tremblay believes that families are the source of any solution and, for that reason, she contributed along with many other parents to preparing this guidebook. “Poussette et astuces en autobus! is a tool for parents, by parents. Mothers, fathers and grand-parents will find it to be full of practical advice that will make it easier for babies to travel by bus and by metro, just as the choice of a safe and easy to handle stroller or as transit corporation regulations,” explained Mrs. Tremblay.

Transit users can obtain a copy of Poussette et astuces en autobus! from Initiative 1,2, 3 GO! centres in the Greater Montréal area, as well as at the STM Customer Service Centre at Berri-UQAM métro station, and those of other public transit companies serving the métropolitan area. Many of these groups will make the most of upcoming family-oriented events, such as la Fête des familles and eco-activities.

Publishing Poussette et astuces en autobus! is one of the solutions to the needs expressed by parents of toddlers. At last, a practical, eco-responsible guide, committed to the quality of life of young families.
