Original MR-63 car headed to the Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant

The inaugural MR-63 car will go to the Canadian Railway Museum next month.

Montréal, September 17, 2018 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announces that in a few weeks the inaugural MR-63 car will go to the Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant to be part of its impressive Exporail collection. With a new exhibit starting in October, the museum will be the only place where you can see this emblematic car from the Montréal métro’s last MR-63 train.

Facelift

Since the last MR-63 was removed from the system, car 81-502 has been given a major facelift and returned to its original look. Employees cleaned and sanded the entire car and repainted it the colours that it was in 1966. The driver’s cab was also completely made over, and the three-pronged poles installed in 2012 were replaced with the single poles previously used.

Originally, the fronts of the MR-63 cars were painted white. The white band on a blue background was introduced in the 90s to match the MR-73 cars.

The first… and the last

This car has quite the history! It’s called the “inaugural car” because it hosted dignitaries during the unveiling of the first MR-63 cars in August 1965. Then it was integrated into the Montréal métro system where it transported millions of people until its retirement 52 years later. In total, the cars each travelled more than four million kilometres from the time when they were commissioned in 1966.

The MR-63 cars were permanently retired from customer service on June 21. This milestone was underlined by a communication campaign and a farewell tour on all four Montréal métro lines.
