Improved bus service in the Mercier-Est area to come this summer
Montréal, May 16, 2019 — The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing improved bus service in the Mercier-Est area, as of June 17, 2019.
The STM will reroute the 26 Mercier-Est line onto Des Ormeaux Street instead of Honoré-Beaugrand Street, between Sherbrooke and Hochelaga streets. The change aims to distribute access to public transit more evenly in the area. Using Des Ormeaux will also double the service on this street, currently used only by the 185 Sherbrooke East line, which runs every 30 minutes on average.
The STM will also add a variation of the 26 line, the 26 X Mercier-Est line, which will run during the morning peak period from the 26 line terminus (Anne-Courtemanche/Claude-Masson) to Honoré-Beaugrand métro station. The new variation will replace the 186 X Sherbrooke-Est line in the area.
“The service change, including the new variation of the 26 Mercier-Est line, will reduce travel time between Faubourg Contrecoeur and Honoré-Beaugrand station on the Green line, increase the number of departures during the morning peak period, reduce the number of transfers and shorten wait times. The goal is to improve the customer experience,” says Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.
“It’s going to make a difference in the lives of people living in Faubourg Contrecoeur, which is poorly served in terms of transportation. People will spend less time getting to the métro and waiting for the bus in the morning. The improvements will make public transit more pleasant for current users, and others may be encouraged to start using it and leave their cars at home. By eliminating certain irritants, we are promoting transit use and helping reduce the number of car trips, which has an impact on traffic and the environment,” says Pierre Lessard-Blais, Mayor of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
