The mayor of Montréal, Denis Coderre, and the chairman of the board of directors of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), Philippe Schnobb, invite everyone to come and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the métro. The festivities on October 14 will take place both inside and outside the Place-des-Arts station.

“The métro is certainly one of Montréal’s greatest achievements, contributing day after day to the economic, social and cultural life of the city and the surrounding area. We hope everyone will be able to celebrate its inauguration, an event that completely transformed Montréal in the 1960s,” declared Montréal’s mayor.

“It’s a great privilege to be able to welcome our clients to the 50th anniversary celebrations of the métro. We would like to thank them for being so loyal to the métro over the last half- century! Rest assured that we are always working to improve the quality of service, notably with the introduction of the Azur cars, so that future generations can benefit to the same extent from this essential Montréal infrastructure,” stated the chairman of the STM.

Historical perspective

Note that the Montréal métro was inaugurated on October 14, 1966 with the opening of the first 20 stations, including Place-des-Arts, where the activities for the 50th anniversary will take place. During its first weekend of operation, one million people tried out the métro, thus marking the start of a long history.
