STM’s 7th sustainable development report published according to GRI G4 requirements now available in English

This interactive report is a first for the STM, as it now publishes an integrated report that includes the activity, sustainable development and financial reports. It is also the first edition that meets Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 requirements. To that end, the STM consulted its internal and external stakeholders to ensure the materiality of sustainable development issues covered in this report. Over 2,400 customers, 32 organizations and 260 employees took part in the exercise.

The STM would also like to underline the contribution made by stakeholders regarding the implementation of its sustainable development approach and the quality of the Sustainable Development Report 2014. Their mobilization is a crucial key to the success of the Sustainable Development Plan 2020.

Multiple occasions for recognition in 2014
In addition to receiving six awards for some of its projects, the STM achieved further recognition when it earned the Gold Level in the prestigious Sustainability Commitment recognition program of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). It is the only program of its kind in the world specifically for the public transit industry and it confirms the STM as a leader in matters of sustainability. 

2014 Highlights

  • A 7% increase in paratransit trips, reaching 3.5 million trips and exceeding the 2015 target.
  • Advances in sustainable procurement, as 73% of the value of contracts included sustainability criteria and 50% of acquired goods were produced in Québec. 
  • Signing of a declaration of commitment to public purchasing from social enterprises and participating in Montréal’s pilot project L’économie sociale, j’achète!
  • A 0.6% decrease in our total GHG emissions per passenger-km, the result of increased ridership and optimized bus service.  
  • A 26% decline in the emission intensity of our small service vehicles since 2007, as they were replaced by more energy-efficient options at the end of their useful life.
  • Improved environmental management system with 63% of the elements in the ISO 14001 standard having been implemented.
  • Opening of the Stinson bus garage for which we are aiming for LEED Gold certification. On average, the new building consumes 60% less energy per m2 than our other surface facilities.
  • Improvement in the rate of residual-material diversion from landfill, from 60% to 66%. 
  • Network of bus priority measures expanded by 28%, for a total of 208.7 kilometres.
  • Holding of diversity awareness workshops attended by over 4,000 employees since 2012.
