Our métro... 40 years of history
from yesterday to tomorrow

Montreal, 5 October 2006 - Speaking to members of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal earlier this morning, the chairman of the STM Board of Directors, Claude Trudel, presented the Société’s vision for the future. He also took the opportunity to remind participants of the métro’s 40th anniversary.

The chairman also addressed the issue of Montréal métro station names, saying that, since 1989, the STM has rejected all requests it received for name changes.

“The STM called for a moratorium in this matter for an indeterminate period of time. Going ahead with any such changes in the next few years is absolutely out of the question”, added Mr. Trudel.

“In a related matter,” he continued, “I would like to put an end, once and for all, to concerns about sponsoring station names. métro station names are simply not for sale. Any projects that may have been based on such a possibility have been abandoned. This does not mean, however, that our subsidiary Transgesco is not free to explore all opportunities of increasing the STM’s autonomous revenue”.

As a public transit corporation, the STM is a key component to economic growth in the Montréal area and contributes to the quality of life of citizens and to the protection of the environment.
