Pie-IX BRT: New phase of extension work on Notre-Dame Street begins February 19

Press release

On February 19, the integrated Pie-IX BRT project office will launch the next phase of work to extend the Pie-IX BRT between Pierre-De Coubertin Avenue and Notre-Dame Street East. The work will be conducted on the east side of the street, from February 19 through to December.

The east side of Pie-IX Boulevard will therefore be closed to traffic. The west side will be reduced to two lanes, one in each direction. The 139 Pie-IX and 439 Express Pie-IX northbound buses will be rerouted away from this section of the street. Access to sidewalks or a pedestrian corridor will be maintained at all times.

Those interested in learning more about this phase or the project in general are invited to a public information session on February 15 at 7 p.m., in person or online. To register :

Work on the Pie-IX BRT extension will be carried out in four phases—in addition to a preparatory phase—until summer 2027 to maintain traffic in both directions and access during construction.

The work on this extension, which is being carried out in tandem with work by the City of Montréal, involves:

  • Installing 1.6 kilometres of reserved lanes in the middle of Pie-IX Boulevard
  • Building six new BRT shelters at four intersections (Pierre-De Coubertin, De Rouen, Ontario and Sainte-Catherine), including one set-down only stop (Notre-Dame)
  • Replacing or refurbishing sewers and water and gas mains
  • Adding new electrical infrastructure
  • Landscaping the boulevard, including planting new trees
  • Implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of all
  • Repairing the road
  • Replacing street lighting and traffic lights
  • Widening sidewalks

Preparatory phase completed
The preparatory phase, which lasted from September 2023 to February 2024, included work at two intersections: De Rouen Street/Pie-IX Boulevard, and Sainte-Catherine Street East/Pie-IX Boulevard. Specifically, this phase saw the construction of access shafts and underground conduits for cabling.

The Pie-IX BRT project is a joint effort between the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the City of Montréal, the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD), the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), and their partners: the City of Laval, the Société de transport de Laval (STL), exo, the Société québécoise des infrastructures (SQI) and the boroughs served by the project.
