Bus network redesign: the STM announces the resumption of public consultations by sector

Press release

This initiative aims in particular to align the service offered with the completion of major public transit projects

Montréal, October 8, 2020 – As it moves forward with its bus network redesign project, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing the resumption of public consultations by sector this fall.

“The bus network redesign project, which began in 2018, is still as relevant today, despite the global pandemic that has been affecting us now for over six months. This initiative, which is part of the STM’s bus improvement plan and 2025 SOP, is also in line with our long-term vision to guide the future bus system redesign. It aims in particular to align the service offered with the completion of major public transit projects such as the REM, the Blue line extension and the Pie-IX BRT,” says Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the STM.

Convincing results

The Web survey of Montrealers allowed the STM to validate the importance of bus service frequency for all types of users. This process aimed to assess four variables, namely travel time, frequency of service, walking distance and the impact of transfers. The purpose was to better understand the relative importance of each variable in the eyes of the public. These findings helped establish five guiding principles, the basis for the bus network redesign strategy. They can be adapted to the reality of each area of the city.

Three virtual information sessions will take place in fall 2020 in the following areas, starting at 6:30 p.m. They will be followed by a three-week online consultation period on the Let’s chat platform, during which, as of October 28, citizens can:

  • Consult the information available, including the recorded information session made available a few days after the information session
  • Ask a question and express their opinion regarding their vision of the network in their neighbourhood
  • Comment on others’ proposals, including those of the STM
  • Suggest ideas and receive comments from other participants
  • Learn about the results of the consultation once they are available

The session schedule is as follows:

  • Lachine and LaSalle: Wednesday, October 28
  • Sud-Ouest, Verdun and Ville-Marie sud: Tuesday, November 17
  • Town of Mount Royal, Outremont and Côte-des-Neiges: Tuesday, November 24

The aim of the bus network redesign is to improve customer experience and review the design and architecture elements of the surface network. Changes related to the redesign will be applied gradually starting at the end of 2021-begining of 2022 (depending on the opening date of the REM station on Île-des-Sœurs) and will take place along with the consultation in other sectors over the next three years.
