Montréal’s 375th anniversary – STM central to the celebrations

Press release

Always on hand for major events in Montréal, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will be key to festivities for Montréal’s 375th anniversary. The STM outlined today its significant contribution to this historic event.

Montréal, February 27, 2017 – Always on hand for major events in Montréal, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will be key to festivities for Montréal’s 375th anniversary. With Alain Gignac, Director general, Société des célébrations du 375e anniversaire de Montréal, Aref Salem, city of Montréal Executive Committee member in charge of transportation and Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of directors in attendance, STM outlined its significant contribution to this historic event.

While hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part in the numerous events planned all over the island, STM is ready to welcome these new passengers aboard its bus and métro network and make it easy for them to get around the city. Based on where activities are held and the numbers expected to attend, STM will implement specific measures, such as adjusting service levels, adding staff in métro stations or providing shuttle services.

Fare cards as a tribute to Montréal
Starting today, transit fares on L’Occasionnelle chip cards featuring the 375th anniversary’s colours are available at the usual points of sale. These fare cards are designed for use by tourists and occasional transit riders during major events. Highlighting the exceptional nature of Montréal’s 375th anniversary, STM has decided to issue these fare cards all year long. It expects to sell nearly seven million of them.

Promoting festivities and public transit
STM will also roll out a vast communications campaign as a tribute to Montréal, with « Vive Montréal » as its theme. All display equipment and visibility tools in STM’s transit system will be used to advertise the festivities and the best way of getting there with public transit. STM will also be taking part in the Montréal vous accueille project, a major undertaking driven by Tourisme Montréal, whose main purpose is to coordinate tourist hospitality in the main gateways for arriving visitors to Montréal, including Place-des-Arts, Saint-Laurent and Lionel-Groulx stations.

STM’s contribution recognized

« Montréal’s 375th anniversary will be the main highlight of 2017 and we’re expecting thousands to visit our beautiful city. An excellent opportunity for people to rediscover Montréal and its public transit system, a source of pride for all Montrealers, » stated Aref Salem, city of Montréal Executive Committee member in charge of transportation.

« Hundreds of events are planned all over Montréal in 2017 and we invite everyone who loves Montréal and who will be attending festivities to use public transit to get around the city efficiently. Indeed, I wish to thank STM for its help in facilitating transportation, but also in letting the public know about our major events, » added Alain Gignac, Director general, Société des célébrations du 375e anniversaire de Montréal.

«STM is proud to take part in celebrations for Montréal’s 375th anniversary. With expanded service during major events, a special L’Occasionnelle chip card marking the city’s 375-year history, and by contributing to the Montréal vous accueille project, we are ready to welcome Montrealers and all visitors aboard our transit system and help make this an unforgettable anniversary celebration, » said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM board of directors, in closing.
