Montréal, May 30, 2016 – Earlier today, the Board of Directors of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced it had adopted a new fare structure that will become effective July 1, 2016. This fare structure is consistent with the 2016 budget, characterized by its focus on reaching a better balance between the customer experience, increased demand and the need to ensure sustainable fiscal management.

« Committed to taking the interest of transit users into account along with each one’s ability to pay, the members of the board, after agreeing to keep fares untouched for the first six months of the year, have approved the fare adjustments. These form part of a larger context in which the STM is aiming for balance between enhanced service, while maintaining control over expenses and limiting fare increases », emphasized Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

Fare adjustments
The STM has always strived to offer quality service to customers while maintaining attractive and affordable fares. This adjustment, the smallest change in fares since 1998, is on average lower than the consumer price index for the last 12 months (1.25%). Also, keep in mind that STM’s monthly fares are still among the lowest in North America.

The STM has upheld the fare freeze for all full fares: single trip, 2-trips fare, 1-day and 3-day passes, and Unlimited Evening fare. The monthly full fare pass will cost $83, the weekly Hebdo pass $25.75 and the 10-trip fare card will cost $27. As for the Unlimited Weekend pass, customers told us they wanted us to extend its duration. The STM heard them: the fare card will be valid as of 4 p.m. Friday instead of 6 p.m., and it will cost $13.75.

The reduced fares are as follows: the monthly pass will cost $49.75, the 4-month pass $197, the weekly Hebdo pass $15.75 and the 10-trips fare card $16.50.

Tangible measures to improve the customer experience are paying off

Since the STM undertook a strategic shift toward improving the transit experience for customers in 2015, results obtained in the first few months of this year have already shown it is working:

  • Best performance by the métro network since 2010: some 97.8% of customers arrived on time
  • Best performance by the bus network since 2010: 99.5% of scheduled service was delivered
  • Métro service disruptions (lasting 5 minutes or more) decreased by 28% from January to April over the same period last year
  • Number of complaints by customers down by 26%
  • Pace of AZUR deliveries picks up to one train a month
  • Implementation of a pilot project allowing buses on the 121 – Sauvé/Côte-Vertu line to be boarded via all doors
  • Gradual roll-out of display screens and speakers aboard buses operating out of the Mont-Royal garage, as part of the iBUS project

Other measures aimed at enhancing the experience for customers will be added over the course of the year:

  • One more train on the Orange line and one more on the Green line during rush hour periods
  • Additional 45,000 hours of bus service, namely on the 70 – Bois-Francs and 48 – Perras lines, as well as the Senneville shared taxi service
  • 27 standard biodiesel-electric hybrid drive buses added to passenger service
  • Several asset maintenance projects underway, namely at Berri-UQAM, Crémazie and Atwater stations which, once completed, should facilitate transportation for customers, while continuing to provide reliable service.
