Montréal, October 5, 2009
– Mr. Michel Labrecque, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and city councillor for the Mile-End district of the borough of Plateau – Mont-Royal, and Mme Lyn Thériault, mayor of the borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, today announced a new route targeted primarily at seniors living in residences in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Mercier Ouest. The new routes 258 – Navette Or Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and 259 – Navette Or Mercier-Ouest will make it easier for seniors to travel by public transit in their neighbourhoods as of October 13 and 14 respectively.

Route 258 – Navette Or Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
The 23-km round-trip route includes 20 stops in each direction and will serve several seniors’ residences in the area as well as the main local points of interest for this clientele. In addition to the residences, the bus route will include the Maisonneuve market, the Maisonneuve library and cultural centre, the YMCA, various community organizations as well as Place Versailles shopping centre.

Route 258 – Navette Or Hochelaga-Maisonneuve will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the trip will take approximately 43 minutes in each direction. As well, the route number will be displayed on a gold-coloured background at the shuttle stops to make it easier to identify this particular service.

Route 259 – Navette Or Mercier-Ouest
The 21-km round-trip route includes 17 stops in each direction and will serve several seniors’ residences in the area as well as the main local points of interest for this clientele. In addition to the residences, the bus route will also include the CLSC Olivier-Guimond, the Edouard-Montpetit swimming pool, various community organizations as well as the Domaine and Place Versailles shopping centres.

Route 259 – Navette Or Mercier-Ouest will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the trip will take approximately 34 minutes in each direction. As well, the route number will be displayed on a gold-coloured background at the shuttle stops to make it easier to identify this particular service.

“We are pleased to announce these new ‘Navette Or’ routes today as part of the service improvement program. With an increased service offer, we are in a position to better respond to the specific needs of seniors and make travelling easier for them in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. I would also like to emphasize that these new shuttle services are possible thanks to the financial support of the ministère des Transports and the Ville de Montréal,” stated Mr. Labrecque.

“These two ‘Navette Or’ routes will bring a sense of well-being to our seniors by reducing their isolation and enabling them to go out safely, and also by creating a new local shopping dynamic in the borough thanks to the access to two major shopping centres in our borough. What’s more, this service will enable them to access health services at the CLSCs and to participate in sports and cultural activities,“ said Mme Thériault, mayor of the borough of Mercier – Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

To publicize these new routes, flyers will be distributed in each of the seniors’ residences served by these shuttles. In addition, community organizations and the borough will promote the service. Finally, posters will be displayed in locations frequented by seniors and along the shuttle route. For more information, clients can call STM-INFO (786-4636). They can also call A-U-T-O-B-U-S (288-6287) to obtain the schedules at their bus stop.
