Be prepared for fare control in the STM transit network:
Starting September 1, proof of payment is required

Montréal, August 27, 200
9 The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) wishes to remind clients that starting Tuesday, September 1, all transit users must be able to prove they have paid their fare.

With the disappearance of tickets and the shift toward OPUS and magnetic fare cards, only the latter can serve as both transfer and proof of payment. Therefore, clients must hold on to them for the duration of their transit trip.

Transit users must pay their fare when taking the bus or métro and keep the valid fare card with them as proof of that payment. Once clients have boarded a bus or gone through métro turnstiles and are in a station’s corridors or on a platform or inside the train, they must have a valid transit fare on hand.

Upon request, clients must allow an STM inspector to verify that their fare was indeed paid, that the fare is valid and that the appropriate fare card is being used. Clients who refuse to comply are subject to a fine of up to $500.

Anyone paying the regular full fare must therefore have an OPUS card charged with the appropriate fare (weekly or monthly CAM pass, single fares or packs of six or ten trips) or have a magnetic fare card, that serves as transfer and as proof of payment after entering the bus or métro.

Students 12 - 25 years old paying the reduced fare must have a photo ID OPUS card, charged with an appropriate transit fare, that serves as both transfer and proof of payment. They can no longer pay the reduced fare in cash aboard the bus.

IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR STUDENTS 12 – 25 YEARS OLD
Reduced fare privileges must be renewed each year before October 31, even if the card itself is valid for two years. Students can renew their fare privilege at SPEQ Photo (2020 University, métro level) or at their school or college when the STM visits their establishment (from August 24 to the end of October). PAYMENT IN CASH
Moreover, anyone paying for their transit ride in cash (full or reduced fare)will receive a magnetic card that serves as both transfer and proof of payment.

However, to pay the reduced fare in cash, persons 65 and over must have a photo ID OPUS card to prove they are entitled to reduced fares. As for schoolchildren 6 to 11 years old who use public transit infrequently, they can always pay the reduced fare in cash without needing an OPUS card.
