The Canadian Urban Transit Association presented the Young Leaders Award to Étienne Le Pironnec and recognized the STM with awards in the categories of Environmental Sustainability, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Marketing and Communications.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) stood out at the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) annual conference, held from November 12 to 15, 2023, in Edmonton. At the annual awards ceremony, the STM took home prizes in four categories, solidifying its role as a leader in sustainable mobility among public transit authorities across Canada.

Recognized expertise across Canada

During the conference, various STM speakers shared best practices by giving talks to industry members. The STM’s expertise in Montréal was then recognized in several categories at the awards ceremony.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion category — Having accurate information to better plan trips is essential for customers with functional limitations. At the awards ceremony, CUTA highlighted the STM’s recent work in developing tools that provide real-time elevator and escalator status updates, as well as a trip planner that determines accessible routes. These new features were highly anticipated by customers and help improve the travel experience for people with functional limitations.

Environmental Sustainability category — The STM implemented one of the world’s largest networks of bus priority measures (BPM) in an effort to increase the attractiveness and efficiency of public transit while fighting climate change. The award recognizes the sustainable development benefits of bus priority measures, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, shorter waiting times, fewer buses needed, faster modal transfers and increased customer satisfaction and ridership.

Marketing and Communications category — To raise the STM’s profile with future customers, the company decided to target young people between the ages of 16 and 24 using TikTok, a social media platform popular with this age group. The exceptional results achieved in less than a year, driven by a bold strategy, convinced the judges to award the prize to the STM, which became North America’s most followed transit company on TikTok.
