Pie-IX BRT: First artwork installed in the Montréal bus network

News

The Pie-IX BRT project office is currently installing the piece Kyrielle, by artist Jean-Sébastien Denis, on several BRT shelters in Montréal. It will be the first artwork built into the city’s bus network.

The installation began in fall 2021, on two shelters in Laval, and should be completed in April, in Montréal.

As per the “1% policy,” the Politique d’intégration des arts à l'architecture et à l'environnement des bâtiments et des sites gouvernementaux et publics, the 68-part piece will eventually be displayed on 34 of the 38 shelters on the BRT’s 13-kilometre route. Visible to everyone travelling down Pie-IX Boulevard, it will become an integral part of daily life in Montréal.

About Kyrielle

“Presented in pairs, the pieces appear as geometric variations inspired by the diamond emblem of the Pie-IX BRT project. […] The forms evoke both the sinuous twisting of a road and the constant movement that characterizes the comings and goings of public transit.”

“As a symbolic reflection of the multiculturalism of public transit users, KYRIELLE seeks to honour the hybrid identities of Montréal and Laval and to revive a sense of pride, belonging and citizenship. The project is not only a vivid way to promote the new face of the Pie-IX BRT but also a chance to truly highlight the cultural diversity that drives both cities, while presenting a joyful, unifying vision of the street.”

The integrated Pie-IX BRT is one of the projects that was developed following the joint declaration from the Quebec and Montréal governments to revitalize the east end of the city.
