The Montréal Métro is truly an art gallery. Dozens of murals, stained glass panels and sculptures of all shapes and colours were installed in most of the network’s 68 stations, for the enjoyment and benefit of all métro riders. As their public steward, STM is also responsible for showcasing the works of art, a collection envied by several subway systems around the world. It is a great source of pride for STM, as well as for most passengers.

Last fall, STM also joined Télé-Québec in the production of a series of video clips highlighting seven of the métro’s works of art. They were recently made available online in the STM website and on a newly created site : www.lafabriqueculturelle.tv. The clips give voice to artists Claire Sarrasin, Hélène Rochette, Guy Montpetit, Jean Mercier, André Léonard, Peter Gnass and the late Frédéric Back, whom we had the privilege of meeting shortly before his death last December 24.

STM : a cultural transporter
It is worth noting that in addition to owning a vast underground art gallery, STM establishes frequent partnerships with a number of events happening in Montréal that promote culture and provide an unusual experience for the travelling public. In short, STM offers more than just public transit, it is also a proud partner to culture in Montréal. More than ever, culture is on the move!
