The STM announces a new reserved lane on De Lorimier Avenue

Press release

New temporary reserved lane for buses, taxis and bicycles

Montréal, December 20, 2023 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing the opening of a new temporary reserved lane for buses, taxis and bicycles on De Lorimier Avenue, due to the road congestion already present in the sector and by the major work in the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel, which will begin on December 26, 2023.

The 600-metre reserved lane will run northbound only, between De Rouen Street and Rachel Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.  This will improve the commutes of more than 2,500 people daily by minimizing the impact of traffic and ensuring more reliable service on bus lines 10 De Lorimier, 45 Papineau and 445 Express Papineau during the work. This translates to about 40 buses, or a departure every 5 minutes, on these lines during rush hour.

“The reserved lane on De Lorimier is yet another milestone in the STM’s response to the traffic congestion caused by both the road congestion already present and by the work on the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel,” says Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM Board of Directors. “Once again, public transit is rising to the challenges posed by construction. We will continue to support Montrealers by providing an even more efficient and reliable service.”

“By creating a reserved lane on De Lorimier, we are showing our commitment to a better balance between modes of transportation in Sainte-Marie. Just as we have worked to protect pedestrians, we must improve public transit, which also suffers from the negative effects of through traffic and the increasing number of cars on the road,” says Sophie Mauzerolle, the member of the City of Montréal’s executive committee responsible for transportation and mobility and a city councillor and member for the Ville-Marie borough. “Residents of Sainte-Marie will benefit from this efficient travel alternative, as will commuters in the other neighbourhoods served by the reserved lane. They will also see an improvement in the punctuality of the buses.”
