The STM and les Amis de la montagne keep their promise as part of Je fais Montréal : new hybrid buses on the 11 – Parc-du-Mont-Royal bus line

Press release

Today, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) introduced a new generation of hybrid drive buses on the 11 – Parc-du-Mont-Royal bus line, sealing the agreement between the STM and Les amis de la montagne as part of Je fais Montréal

Montréal, May 24, 2016 – Today, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) introduced a new generation of hybrid drive buses on the 11 – Parc-du-Mont-Royal bus line. Sealing the agreement between the STM and Les amis de la montagne as part of Je fais Montréal, the inaugural run took place with Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal, Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors, Peter A. Howlett, President of Les Amis de la montagne, Raymond Leduc, President of  Nova Bus and Prevost, along with Aref Salem, Montréal Executive Committee member responsible for transportation, and Mrs. Elsie Lefebvre, city councillor, Villeray district, and associate councillor responsible for the City of Montréal’s electrification strategy, all in attendance.

« This initiative illustrates the determination shown by stakeholders in the city’s development engaged in making Montréal’s rebirth a collective priority. Indeed, the City has promised to support and facilitate 181 commitments from Je vois Montréal by establishing a project tracking bureau. The project carried out by the STM in collaboration with Les Amis de la montagne will not only serve to showcase Mount Royal, but also improve the city’s environmental bottom line. This is a nice example of success, within the framework of Je fais Montréal », explained Mr. Coderre, Mayor of Montréal.

« We are pleased to carry out this project, the result of a close collaboration between Les Amis de la montagne and the STM. Easily identified by their special interior dressing and exterior look highlighting Mount Royal’s many attractions, these hybrid buses will provide the public with a unique experience. They will certainly encourage Montrealers and visitors alike to use public transit to reach the mountain. This is indeed a precious gift for the Parc du Mont-Royal, celebrating its 140th anniversary today », added Peter A. Howlett, President of Les Amis de la Montagne.

« With this agreement, the STM plans on providing eco-friendly public transportation to the park, the most heavily-used in Montréal. This commitment follows in the wake of the delivery of 27 standard, biodiesel-electric hybrid drive buses in 2016, making it possible for the STM to improve comfort and service for customers. Overall, it is not only a new step in the electrification of the surface network, but also very good news for improving the experience for customers », declared Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

« Nova Bus welcomes this initiative by the STM and Les Amis de la montagne as part of Je fais Montréal. Hundreds of LFS buses travel the streets of Montréal each day, helping to make sustainable mobility in the city better all the time. Our hybrid HEV LFS has a proven track record and will make it possible to reduce greenhouse gases by up to 30%, offering visitors an even greener ride on their way up to Mount Royal », added Raymond Leduc, President of Nova Bus and Prevost

Les Amis de la montagne is a registered philanthropic organization with a stated mission of protecting and enhancing Mount Royal by promoting community engagement and environmental education.
