Navette Or by taxi A new service for seniors in Dorval

Press release

Montréal, August 22, 2012  –  As a way of better meeting the needs of City of Dorval senior citizens, Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will offer a new, on-call Navette Or by taxi service as a pilot project starting next September 4.

The service will be available to customers 65 and over, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at some thirty designated stops. Customers will be free to choose their departure and return times within that timeframe, but taxi rides will only be provided between two such stops. The local landmarks served by the Navette Or include major residences for seniors, the public library, the Peter B. Yeomans cultural centre, the Sarto-Desnoyers community centre, the Surry aquatic and community centre, Les jardins Dorval shopping centre, as well as the Jean XXIII public pool.

“In addition to current public transit services that enable Dorval residents to quickly reach downtown Montréal, the new service will provide for easier mobility within the municipality, during the off-peak period, by reducing waiting times and the number of transfers. This pilot project seeks to meet a need expressed by a large number of senior residents in the area. Financed equally by Transport Québec and the Montréal Urban Agglomeration, as part of STM’s public transit service improvement program (PASTEC), the new Navette Or is the result of STM and City of Dorval officials working together,” declared Marvin Rotrand, vice-chairman of STM’s board of directors.

“I am very pleased by the introduction of this new transport service that meets the needs of our seniors by providing them with access to a number of designated public locations in every city sector. By ensuring a safer and more comfortable way for our older citizens to get around town, the Navette Or by taxi will complement the numerous other programs and services already offered by the municipality all year long,” added the mayor of Dorval, Edgar Rouleau.

To take advantage of this service, customers must register 72 hours prior to their first request for transportation by calling the City of Dorval’s community assistance line at 514 633-4100 or by contacting the STM at 514 280-9055. They will then have to provide an ID card proving their age. After, customers must reserve their taxi transportation the day they need it, at least 40 minutes ahead of time. They can also reserve for the return trip in a single call. Customers should show up at the stop a few minutes before the stated time. When boarding, they are required to produce their photo ID OPUS card to pay the reduced fare. Weekly and monthly transit passes, cash and tickets on disposable magnetic cards are all accepted as payment for the taxi ride. Registered customers can be accompanied by a maximum of three other non-registered people, as long as they pay the required fare.

Information about this service is also available in the Shared taxibus section of the STM website at www.stm.info. Customers can also obtain schedule information for the STM’s regular bus service by calling AUTOBUS at 514 288-6287, from the STM website, from its mobile site at m.stm.info, by SMS messaging by calling 52786, or through our iPhone and Android apps.
