Something new in the STM's 2010 fare schedule

Montréal, December 18, 2009
As part of the adoption of the 2010 fare schedule, the Board of Directors of the STM approved a series of initiatives to encourage customer loyalty. As a result, as of January, the STM will be offering an annual subscription program for the regular-fare monthly pass. In addition, it will introduce a new four-month reduced-fare option and will leave the cost of a single fare unchanged for a fourth consecutive year.

“The OPUS card technology allows us to implement new fare strategies with the objective of offering our clientele a range of products and services that is more and more diversified and accessible. These initiatives will simply life for our clients and will encourage them to use our services even more,” declared Mr. Michel Labrecque, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

What’s new for 2010
The STM is breaking new ground by proposing that its clients register online for the Annual OPUS, a new program that offers a subscription to the regular-fare monthly pass for a period of twelve consecutive months. Payment for this fare must be made by the 15th of the month preceding the month of use via bank debit or credit card. Available as of the beginning of January at STM.INFO, the Annual OPUS is a modern, fast and practical way to buy the pass.

The STM will also offer students aged 12 to 25 and seniors aged 65 and over a prepaid subscription for four consecutive months. On a monthly basis, this fare is the same price as in 2009, or $37, representing a saving of $21 per year. Available in métro stations (at the fare booth or the automatic fare vending machines) or from an authorized agent, this product will be economical and more practical for parents, as they will no longer have to make a special trip each month to recharge their child’s card.

Another new offering. The STM and AIR MILES are joining forces to enable members of the AIR MILES® Reward Program to redeem their miles for regular-fare or reduced-fare monthly passes. This offer will be available as of December 23 at www.airmiles.ca
(Will open in new window)"> www.airmiles.ca. Internet users will be able to redeem 610 miles for a regular-fare monthly pass, or 330 miles for a reduced-fare pass. A great present to give yourself or someone else!

A reasonable fare increase
As of January 1, 2010, the monthly pass will cost $70, an increase of $1.50 or 5¢ per day. The cost for the reduced-fare monthly pass will go up to $38.75, an increase of $1.75 or 6¢ per day. Cash payments will remain at $2.75 and $1.75, the same as in 2007. The price of 10 trips has been set at $21, or $2.10 per unit, with the reduced fare costing $12. Finally, the Société will adjust the prices of the one-day and three-day passes to $7 and $14 respectively.

This past November, the Imperial College London announced that the STM had distinguished itself among its peers in several ways. In fact, when compared to 26 other metro networks around the world, the Montréal métro is the most productive in the world and, with its fares being among the lowest, it is recognized as offering excellent value.

Popular initiatives
Building on the success of the Family Outings program, which was introduced at the end of 2008, the STM is continuing this initiative by joining forces with a greater number of cultural and entertainment partners. This program, which encourages families to use public transit on weekends and holidays, features reductions on admission prices to various points of interest in Montréal.

Elsewhere, the STM is improving sustainable mobility thanks to several partnership agreements with transportation organizations. On one hand, the DUO auto + bus program with Communauto and the Bixi-bus program with the Société de vélo libre-service enable clients to benefit from discounts when they subscribe to these services. On the other hand, thanks to the Tandem VÉLO – STM package, members of the Vélo-Québec Association receive a free strip of six tickets with the purchase of five monthly passes.

“In spite of the economic and financial crisis that has resulted in thousands of job losses in 2009 in the Greater Montréal area, the STM was able to sustain the historic ridership level of 382.5 million trips achieved in 2008. In keeping with its commitment, it has implemented all its planned service improvements. Moreover, its promotional efforts as well as the partnerships that it has developed with major trip generators have certainly contributed to this result. With the signs of economic recovery still weak, the STM must continue this winning strategy so as to further the growth in the number of trips in 2010 and increase the level of customer satisfaction,” added the Chairman.

Finally, Mr. Labreque reiterated that everybody must do their part to ensure the success of public transit, whether it be the government of Quebec, the Montréal agglomeration, the STM or its clients. However, automobile drivers will also have to do theirs, as their share has not been indexed since 1996. This is why the Board of Directors intends to take the necessary steps to correct the situation in 2010.
