This competition is part of the station’s major renovation.
Today, the STM announced the launch of a competition for the creation of a work of art to be installed in the Montréal métro, specifically at Outremont station on the Blue line. This competition is part of the station’s major renovation, which includes the installation of elevators, a new natural ventilation shaft and a new staircase. This competition is funded by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable du Québec and the Politique d’intégration des arts à l’architecture et à l’environnement des bâtiments et des sites gouvernementaux et publics (1% policy).
Professional artists in Quebec are invited to submit their applications no later than June 7, 2023, at 4 p.m. Competition rules and program are available here (in French only).
In carrying out this project, the STM has the support of the City of Montréal’s public art bureau, recognized for its considerable expertise in the matter. The STM also solicited the cooperation of several influential public figures in the visual arts scene to form a jury, who will initially select three finalists before choosing the winning submission.
During construction of the métro’s initial network, leading up to the 1967 World Fair, Expo 67, and later with each métro expansion, officials in Montréal were inspired to include works of art in most stations. Featured throughout the network, the STM’s impressive collection today consists of more than 90 creations by Québec artists.
