Corporate Knights, a magazine focused on sustainability, has included the STM in a select group of Canadian enterprises that stand out thanks to their exemplary responsible practices. In a list released today, the STM is ranked ninth among the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada. The STM is the only passenger transportation enterprise to make the list.
Eligibility criteria
To establish its Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada ranking, Corporate Knights analysed the sustainability and social responsibility performance of 232 Canadian corporations with revenues over $1 billion. The ranking is based on over a dozen indicators, and the companies are compared with international players in the same fields.
The STM stands out thanks to its revenue to greenhouse gas emissions ratio. It is number three in this area and number one among its international peers. Its efforts to reduce GHGs emitted by its vehicles and facilities, as well as its hydroelectricity powered métro, contributed to this ranking. Corporate Knights also underlined the STM’s good governance, especially in terms of the presence of women on its Management Committee and Board of Directors.
