STM entices motorists for Earth Day

On this April 22, it is worth keeping in mind that every small action does make a difference for our planet. On this April 22, it is worth keeping in mind that every small action does make a difference for our planet. For this reason, the STM in association with Jour de la Terre Québec and CAA-Québec will hand out OPUS cards loaded with 10 single tickets to some 2,500 Montréal motorists, so that they may give public transit a try and give more thought to their mobility.

This special offer proved quite popular: the 2,500 participants registered on CAA-Québec’s website in less than 24 hours! It is interesting to note that, of that total, 88% of people indicated they mostly use their car for their everyday mobility needs.

Choosing to leave the car behind, even if only for a few occasional trips, still offers significant benefits. In fact, the numbers easily add up in favour of public transit: a single bus filled with commuters takes 45 cars off the road, while three conventional buses can eliminate a kilometer-long traffic jam. The financial side should also not be overlooked: a car costs over $7,000 a year for owners, while STM public transportation costs about $950. And let’s not forget how transit is a sustainable and responsible means of transportation.

The STM welcomes these new users and also marks Earth Day by thanking its many loyal customers for whom it is April 22 every day. By choosing to use public transit on a daily basis, you help Montréal breathe a little easier while protecting our planet.

This initiative was made possible thanks to financial support from the Ministry of Transportation, Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Electrification.
