For a greener world
At the international level, the public transport sector aims to double its market share by 2025. Here in Montréal, as part of its 2020 Strategic plan, the STM is targeting a 40% increase in ridership by 2020 – a total of 540 million passenger trips.

Public transit – a winning proposition
The advantages and benefits of public transit are well known. Sustainable mobility is at the heart of the smooth operation and economic development of all major cities. Taking the bus and métro is more than just an easy way to get around; it’s also a responsible and sustainable action - a smart choice in many different ways:

  • Economic vitality: the STM generates economic spin-offs of more than $1.2 billion every year
  • Job creation: the STM creates more than 12,000 direct and indirect jobs
  • Reduced traffic congestion: traffic jams cost a lot (more than $1.42 billion according to an MTQ study
  • Reduced GHG emissions: the 412.6 million passenger trips made by bus and métro in 2012 had the same environmental benefit as more than 200 million trees in one year: a reduction of 550,000 tons of GHG

A few words about the UITP

The UITP is an international organization of public transit authorities and operators. It has 3,400 members in 92 countries.

The STM is an active member of the UITP, sharing and discussing the best practices of transport companies around the world to stay in touch with what is being done elsewhere. We know that it is by comparing ourselves and being inspired by the best that the STM will continue to improve and can aspire to be one of the world’s ten best transport companies by 2020.
