Maintenance staff strike : STM submits offer on normative clauses

Press release

In an effort to avoid a strike and reach an agreement, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) submitted a global offer yesterday covering the majority of normative clauses related to work organization. However, this proposal was rejected by the union. Despite this, STM remains available to meet with the union and the mediator in the coming days to continue discussions.

Since the arrival of the mediator on June 16th, both parties have prioritized their respective normative demands to focus efforts on key issues. To date, more than 20 demands have resulted in agreements, fairly distributed between STM and the union.

“Yesterday, we reaffirmed our commitment to reach an agreement by submitting an offer on normative clauses. This is an important step to finally focus our discussions on salary clauses,” said Marie-Claude Léonard, STM’s Chief Executive Officer. “However, the union’s current salary demands do not, at this stage, allow us to foresee an agreement before the strike begins. STM must respect taxpayers’ ability to pay, without having to cut service offerings.”

The union’s current demands represent an increase of approximately $330 million in the budget over five years, which far exceeds STM’s financial framework.

If the union wishes to obtain a financial framework that reflects its demands, it will need to propose adjustments to working conditions that would directly fund them.

STM remains committed to continuing negotiations in good faith, with respect for its customers and the financial sustainability of its operations.

Plan your trips

If the union decides to proceed with the strike, it is strongly recommended to clients to consult STM’s real-time tools before and during travel to get the most up-to-date information.

STM’s website remains the most reliable source, as it integrates planned schedules, field-based adjustments, and real-time data.

STM also encourages customers to allow more time than usual and to plan their trips in advance.

Information is already posted in stations, at booths, and on social media. Customers can refer to it immediately.

Finally, all information is centralized and regularly updated on the dedicated page: stm.info/strike.
