The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is encouraging riders to plan their trips carefully during the maintenance workers’ strike, scheduled to take place June 9 to 17, inclusive.
To this end, the STM has created an information page addressing frequently asked questions: stm.info/strike.
Commuters are invited to consider active transportation options or even working from home, as the strike is expected to impact traffic across Montréal.
“We’re aware of the inconvenience this strike may cause for our customers, and we’re doing everything we can to help ensure their trips go as smoothly as possible,” said STM general manager Marie-Claude Léonard. “We’re in a time of change, and it’s important that we refocus on our core mission: moving people. Given the STM’s current financial context, we need to ensure our operations remain cost effective. This must be reflected in the ongoing collective agreement negotiations in order to respect the financial limits of our funding partners.”
Essential services schedule
The STM reminds customers of the essential services that will remain in place, in accordance with the ruling by the Tribunal administratif du travail:
Details for June 9, 10, and 11
School routes and shuttle buses scheduled for outings will be maintained on these dates, even during off-peak hours.
REM replacement shuttles will only operate between 11:15 p.m. and 1:15 a.m. on these dates.
Metro stations will be closed outside of scheduled service hours.
Details on 50% service reduction on June 12, 16 and 17
On these days, the STM will operate at 50% capacity, which means:
- Metro trains will run at half the usual frequency (one train out of two)
- Approximately 50% of bus trips will be cancelled, though the exact number will vary by route based on operational needs
Refunds and financial compensation
The STM would like to clarify that no refunds or financial compensation will be provided for monthly or weekly passes that have already been activated.
Other fare types can be used at a later date or may be eligible for a refund, in line with the ARTM’s exchange and refund policy.
Negotiation table
Discussions are continuing at the negotiation table. The STM has proposed to the union to use a third party to help find solutions and speed up the pace of discussions.
