62nd UITP CONGRESS IN 2017 Montréal to Host the World Congress on Mobility and City Transport

Communiqué

Montréal, April 10, 2013   – Montréal has been elected host city of the 62nd International Association of Public Transport (UITP) World Congress and Mobility and City Transport Exhibition. The event will be held in 2017, the year of Montréal’s 375th anniversary. The UITP’s decision can be attributed to the combined efforts of the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT), the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), Montréal’s Palais des congrès and Tourisme Montréal. The news was announced today in Hamburg, Germany by the UITP’s Executive Board.

The congress will be held from May 13 to 17, 2017 and will attract over 9,500 delegates and visitors from more than 80 countries, as well as 350 exhibitors. This international event is expected to generate economic spinoffs for Montréal estimated at over $13 million.

As a finalist alongside Brisbane, Australia and Seoul, South Korea, Montréal was chosen to host the congress, which is held every two years in cities where sustainable mobility plays an important role. Over the course of five days, a plethora of major international players in the public transit field will take part in training and networking activities as well as an exhibition at Montréal’s Palais des congrès. The congress will also include a component that will be open to the public.

“This event is perfectly aligned with the AMT’s vision to promote public transit in the Greater Montréal Area. This type of congress will help demonstrate our expertise in project planning. It will also be an opportunity to share best practices in transportation management with stakeholders from all over the world,” pointed out Nicolas Girard, AMT President and CEO.

“Montréal has the most frequent users of public transit in North America and we are working to become nothing less than the best public transportation agency in the world in our category. Considering all the projects that will bear fruit by 2017, the AZUR metro cars, our new hybrid and electric buses, real-time information and the growing number of reserved lanes, Montréal was clearly the ideal city to host this congress,” declared Mr. Michel Labrecque, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

“Located at the center of the city’s major transportation infrastructures, Montréal’s Palais des congrès is the ideal place to hold this event”, says Marc Tremblay, President and CEO of the Société du Palais des congrès de Montréal. “As the top host city for international events in America, Montréal and the Palais des congrès will ensure that the 2017 UITP delegates have an event experience they will never forget! The team is proud to contribute to the success of such a prestigious event!” he adds.

“Montréal’s 375th anniversary is a unique opportunity to celebrate our city, but also to show the whole world the know-how and capacity for innovation that sets Montrealers apart. The 2017 UIPT congress will help position the metropolis among the world’s best cities in terms of mobility and urban transportation. What a great showcase for Montréal!” adds the Honourable Charles Lapointe, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal.
