Montréal, September 16, 2013 – A partner of In Town Without My Car day since it was launched eleven years ago, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) offers a host of activities to help make September 20 a day-long celebration of sustainable mobility.

Between 7 and 9 a.m., STM squads will be on hand in three downtown métro stations (Square-Victoria, Bonaventure, and Lucien-L’Allier) to thank customers.  A few Étoiles du métro musicians will also be there to enliven the proceedings.

Inside an area closed to traffic near the corner of Saint-Jacques and Square-Victoria streets, a life-size model of the operator’s cab of Montréal’s new métro car – AZUR – will give visitors a chance to imagine themselves at the controls. A special STM bus and some recycled urban furniture will provide visitors with a picnic area and places to relax.

Throughout the day, the STM’s Étoiles du métro will take turns providing a musical backdrop for these activities and, at 5 p.m. they’ll perform on the main stage of En ville sans ma voiture, located near Viger street.

New urban treasure hunts
Inspired by the success of its Unlock your city competition, which attracted hundreds of participants this summer, the STM will host two new mini-treasure hunts – at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. – at the corner of Saint-Jacques and du Square-Victoria streets. The winning team of each hunt will take home one year of free transportation on the STM transit system and more than $500 in cultural outings. The second- and third-place winners will each take home four months of free transportation and $200 in cultural outings. The outings are provided courtesy of La vitrine culturelle.

Park(ing) Day throughout the city
To remind us that parking spaces can be used for constructive and creative purposes, the STM supports the Park(ing) Day project. For a single day, parking spaces throughout the city will be transformed. The STM’s Park(ing) spaces will be easily recognizable by their green carpets covered with picnic tables and swings.

Located throughout the city, these ephemeral parks will also mark the location of STM partners offering discounts to the holders of OPUS cards.
