Integrated Pie-IX BRT Project

Project summary

The Pie-IX BRT is a leading, high-performance public transit project integrated into the work to rebuild and upgrade Pie-IX Boulevard between eastern Laval and Montréal.

  • The commissioning of the initial sections between Laval and Pierre-De Coubertin in Montréal (except for the Jean-Talon section between Everett and Bélair) is still planned for fall 2020. The work will be completed in Montréal in 2023, and in Laval in 2021.
  • The commissioning of the Jean-Talon section, including construction of a pedestrian tunnel between the Pie-IX BRT and the future Blue line extension station, is planned for 2023. Preparatory work is currently under way in the section. The work will begin in 2020 and be completed in 2023.
  • Commissioning of the Pie-IX BRT between Pierre-De Coubertin and Notre-Dame is planned for 2023. The work will begin in 2021 and be completed in 2023.

About the Pie-IX BRT:

A public transit infrastructure spread across 13 km of Pie-IX Boulevard, between Saint-Martin Boulevard in Laval and Notre-Dame Street in Montréal:

  • 18 stops in Montréal and two in Laval, all located in the centre of the road except for the stop at Pie-IX métro station
  • Bus priority traffic lights in real time
  • SRB bus shelters
  • Reserved lanes will operate 24/7. They will be a different colour and will be situated in the central, rather than left, lane.

The works started in 2018 and will be fully completed in 2023.

The City of Montréal is using the BRT project to upgrade its sewer and water networks, which have reached the end of their useful lives. The City will also reconstruct the road, sidewalks and grass medians of Pie-IX Boulevard between Henri-Bourassa Boulevard and Notre-Dame Street East.

The project will improve residents’ surroundings by planting several hundred trees, widening sidewalks, refurbishing the road, medians and lighting, and installing new traffic lights. The improvements will turn the area into a multifunctional environment where public transportation will be an important part of residents’ travel habits.

This infrastructure will accommodate the various STM bus lines and bus lines of other transit companies that will regularly travel the entire length or part of Pie-IX Boulevard. The project will also improve bus service in neighbourhoods near the Pie-IX BRT as well as areas farther away.

The number of trips along the Pie-IX axis will double over time. Once the project is completed, 70,000 trips will be made on the Pie-IX BRT every day.

Phase 2 of major work and closing of east side of Pie-IX Boulevard


Until December 2020, the east side of Pie-IX Boulevard will be closed to traffic.  Some remaining work will still be required on the east side.

Bus lines 139 Pie-IX, 439 Pie-IX and 41 Quartier Saint-Michel/Ahuntsic

Southbound bus lines: these bus lines take Pie-IX Boulevard, aside from a detour along Des Récollets between Industriel and Henri-Bourassa. Line 41 service still takes Pie-IX Boulevard.

Northbound bus lines are rerouted onto adjacent streets.

Stops may be moved or cancelled. Check the signage at your bus stops.

Please note that Amos station is now closed, as there is no longer bus service at this stop. The station’s fare vending machine is no longer in service.

Bus line 355 Pie-IX

The 355 Pie-IX bus begins service at 11:00 p.m. and stays on Pie-IX Boulevard.

Traffic is maintained at all times in both directions.

Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane are maintained on the west side of Pie-IX Boulevard between Sherbrooke and Industriel.

Two northbound lanes and one southbound lane are maintained on the west side of Pie-IX Boulevard between Industriel and Henri-Bourassa.

Vehicles travelling in this area are also able to use Saint-Michel, Viau and Lacordaire.

Work completed in 2020

  • Replacement of sewer, aqueduct and gas conduits
  • Construction of new electrical infrastructure
  • Refurbishment of the road foundation
  • Refurbishment of sidewalks
  • Replacement of lighting
  • Start of preparatory work on the pedestrian tunnel at the corner of Jean-Talon and Pie-IX, which will connect the BRT shelters to the planned Blue line extension infrastructure.

Work schedule 

The work schedule will adjust to the progress of the site. The work could take place between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

On-street parking: Parking restrictions will be in place around and inside the work area. Read the signage carefully.

Sidewalks and access: Pedestrian access to buildings will be maintained at all times. Sidewalks may occasionally be obstructed; in this event, pedestrian detours will be implemented.

Bus: Service will be maintained, but certain bus stops could be relocated or cancelled. Read bus stop signs carefully and find out more at 514-287-8919 or

Sidewalks and access: Pedestrian access to buildings will be maintained at all times. Sidewalks may occasionally be obstructed during certain operations.

Garbage, recycling and organic waste collection: Collection schedules will be maintained for the duration of the work. Please clearly identify your bins.

Businesses on Pie-IX Boulevard: Please note that the businesses on Pie-IX Boulevard will remain open during the work.

Procedure to follow if you stop receiving your mail: While work is underway on the Pie-IX BRT project, there may be issues with the delivery of your mail by Canada Post. Your homes and mailboxes will remain accessible; however, there may be issues with deliveries due to modified access caused by the work. To resolve these issues, find out more and contact Canada Post through their mail delivery service or at 1-866-607-6301.

Water shut-offs: Water may be shut off during certain work. Notices will be distributed to affected homes 48 hours before a shut-off. We ask that you pay close attention to these notices so that you can prepare accordingly.

Snow removal: In the event of snow accumulation, the work will be reconfigured to allow snow to be removed from the lanes. This will require closing one lane on Pie-IX Boulevard between Sherbrooke and Henri-Bourassa. Follow the signs and allow for additional travel time.

Rest assured that we will take all the necessary measures to reduce the impact of the work.

Follow the project’s progress:

IMPORTANT: Work may be postponed in the event of operational constraints or unfavourable weather.

The project will be completed in four phases between Gouin and Pierre-De Coubertin, except for the Jean-Talon section between Everett and Bélair

Phase 1: March 2019 to winter 2019

  • Work on the west side of Pie-IX Boulevard
  • 2 southbound lanes and 1 northbound lane

Phase 2: March 2020 to December 2020

  • Work on the east side of Pie-IX Boulevard
  • 2 southbound lanes and 1 northbound lane between Sherbrooke street and Industriel boul.
  • 2 northbound lanes and 1 southbound lane between Industriel boul. and Henri-Bourassa boul.

Phase 3: 2021

  • New configuration of the central median and construction of the new BRT stations
  • 1 lane in each direction (northbound and southbound)

Phase 4: 2022

  • Final road paving and commissioning of the Pie-IX BRT.

Ongoing work in Laval

The Pie-IX BRT will be fully commissioned in Laval at the same time as the Montréal service in fall 2022.

Work in three areas will be completed in 2020:

  • Saint-Martin area
  • Route 125 area
  • Rose-de-Lima / De la Concorde area

Work schedule

  • The normal weekday schedule is from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but work could be extended until as late as 9:00 p.m.
  • If necessary, there could be work on weekends.
  • If necessary, there could be night work on De la Concorde Boulevard.

Work planned in 2020

Saint-Martin area:

  • March to April: Excavation and construction of the retention pond (Finish)
  • May: Construction of the park-and-ride lots, followed by demolition and excavation work on Saint-Martin and Vanier boulevards. (Finish)
  • June to July: Construction of the west park-and-ride lots and the BRT shelter slab.
  • August: Opening of the Saint-Martin East and West park-and-ride lots. Commissioning of the Saint-Martin and Vanier boulevard bike lanes.
  • October to November: Installation of the BRT shelters and signage.

During the work, the two park-and-ride lots will be open on an alternating basis.

Route 125 and ramps:

Description of the work: Construction of a reserved lane on the Route 125 shoulder in each direction; refurbishment of the drainage network; installation of signage; refurbishment of the ramps.

  • May to August: Work on and closure of the northbound shoulder lanes.
  • June to September: Work on and closure of the southbound shoulder lanes.

Rose-de-Lima Avenue / Centre de la nature de Laval / De la Concorde Boulevard area

  • May: Demolition and excavation work. (Finish)
  • June to September: Construction of the new drainage network; refurbishment of the parking lot; construction of the slab for the BRT shelter; construction of the reserved lane; refurbishment of the sidewalk.
  • October to November: Landscaping and installation of the BRT shelter; installation of traffic lights and street lights; connection of the reserved lane; construction of sidewalks.

The Centre de la nature de Laval parking lot will not be accessible from May to August. Pedestrian access to the swimming pool via Du Parc Avenue will be maintained.

Local traffic will be allowed on Rose-de-Lima Avenue.

Flaggers will direct traffic for access to La Marmaille daycare centre.

De la Concorde Boulevard is partially closed between Vanier Boulevard and Aréna Yvon-Chartrand.

No impact is to be expected. Bus stops may, however, be moved during work. We invite you to visit your transit agency's website and check the signs at bus stops.

During the project, we will take residents into account and ensure that activities at the Centre de la nature de Laval, CPE La Marmaille and other places near the work zones can be carried out safely at all times.

Pedestrian access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times. Measures will be implemented to facilitate parking and deliveries.

Access to an adequate number of spaces in the Saint-Martin park-and-ride will be maintained.

The integrated Pie-IX BRT project will have stations all the way to Laval and involve:

  • The construction of three BRT shelters
  • The construction of a park-and-ride lot on Saint-Martin Boulevard
  • The refurbishment of the parking lot at the Centre de la nature de Laval
  • The addition of bike lanes on Saint-Martin and De la Concorde boulevards
  • The planting of hundreds of new trees and shrubs
  • The refurbishment of surface infrastructure (landscaping, geometric reconfiguration and road work)
  • The installation of new LED lighting in the Centre de la nature de Laval parking lot and along the reserved lane
  • The installation of new traffic lights on Saint-Martin and De la Concorde boulevards
  • The construction of conduits for the Ville de Laval’s future fibre optic network
  • The construction of new drainage systems

Work on the Pie-IX Bridge, including a dedicated BRT lane, is not part of the integrated Pie-IX BRT project. The Ministère des Transports will be responsible for work and communications related to the Pie-IX bridge. The project is currently postponed to a later date.

The Amos station opened on October 17, 2016. This first Pie-IX BRT station was built as a prototype. The results will enable optimized construction of the subsequent stations.

Considering the word underway on Pie-IX boulevard, the Amos station won't be in service starting March 2 2020.

The east side of Pie-IX Boulevard will be closed between Amos Street and Pierre-De-Coubertin Avenue to ensure maximum traffic flow throughout the second phase of the work. In addition, this will maximize safety for local residents and avoid confusion for motorists and transit users. It will also allow various parking areas to be created when certain sections on the east side are not under construction. Notices will be sent to inform residents of the new sections of work on the east side of Pie-IX Boulevard and the new available parking spaces.

A number of protection measures will be integrated to ensure the safety of transit users and pedestrians on Pie-IX Boulevard, including:

  • Reduced speed of traffic thanks to narrower lanes
  • Elimination of all left turns unprotected by traffic lights
  • Low concrete walls with guardrails will be built on both sides of the stations to protect users.
  • Fencing installed across from the stations will prevent people from crossing the road other than at intersections.
  • At the intersections where the stations are located, pedestrian crossing lights with digital and audio countdown and a call button will be installed at the curb and on the median at station crossings to help pedestrians cross the boulevard.
  • Pedestrian crosswalks will be widened to 5 metres.
  • The reserved BRT lane will be in a different colour, to avoid confusion for car drivers.
  • The reserved BRT line will be used full-time. No other vehicles will be able to use the lane.

Yes. The BRT stations will be equipped with strips of tactile paving in contrasting colours and be raised up by about 13 mm. Pedestrian crossing lights with digital and audio countdown are also planned for the stations, so that pedestrians will be able to cross Pie-IX Boulevard safely. A wheelchair loading zone is also planned for each of the 17 stations.

The City of Montréal and the ARTM have agreed to take advantage of the implementation of the Pie-IX BRT to carry out municipal infrastructure work (roadwork and underground systems) that is needed due to the end of the systems’ useful lives and asset capacity limits.

Integration of municipal infrastructure work into the Pie-IX project has the following advantages:

  • Reduction of both partners’ costs by combining certain worksite expenses
  • Concentration of all of the work during a given period, thus limiting the impact of the work on nearby residents and road users
  • Minimization of inconvenience for residents and users

The reserved BRT lane will be located in the middle of Pie-IX Boulevard. The lane will be exclusive and permanent. With the BRT, there will no more be conflicts between buses and drivers turning right or vehicles entering and exiting the numerous driveways along Pie-IX Boulevard. The planned configuration will mean reduced travel time and more consistent service than the curbside reserved lane. Customer experience will also be greatly improved with comfortable stations where riders can buy their fares, load through the articulated buses’ three doors and view information in real time. BRT frequency and speed will be comparable to the métro.

Various electrification scenarios were analysed, first by the AMT in 2011 and then by the STM in 2013 and 2014.

Further to these studies, the scenario of an electric bus (or trolleybus) was not retained by the AMT, the City of Montréal or the STM, essentially due to very high costs, the impact of poles and overhead cables, and conflicts between the underground bases needed to support the power supply and municipal underground systems. The bases supporting the poles required for electrification are much larger than normal street light bases. In addition, there would be conflicts between these much larger bases and the roots of the numerous mature trees along the boulevard, the potable water main in the middle of the boulevard and certain sections of the sewer that have been retrofitted by the City of Montréal since 2011 in preparation for the Pie-IX BRT.

The Pie-IX Bridge, linking Laval to the Island of Montréal, via Highway 125, will undergo a major renovation. A reserved lane for the BRT is scheduled to be integrated into the project. The Ministère des Transports will be responsible for work and communications regarding the Pie-IX Bridge. The project is currently postponed to a later date.

Consultations and information evenings

In the spring of 2017, to answer the concerns expressed by shops, industries and institutions, the integrated project office team set up the Comité d'affaires SRB Pie-IX (Pie-IX BRT business committee).

Information evenings were held in 2018 and February 2019 (see presentations below). The purpose of these events was to present the project as a whole, the detailed phasing of the work, and the planned mitigation measures. These presentations were followed by a question and discussion period with citizens and the project team.

Good neighbours committees were formed. The committees give Pie-IX Boulevard residents a chance to meet periodically during the work to receive up-to-date information and share their concerns. This ongoing cooperation is aimed at minimizing or avoiding negative impacts of the work on citizens and maximizing positive benefits.

The project in images

The extension of the Blue line is one of the projects developed following the declaration made by the Government of Quebec and the City of Montréal to revitalize the east end of Montréal. The Pie-IX BRT project is an integrated project developed jointly by the ARTM, the City of Montréal and the Ministère des Transports (MTQ). It is carried out in close collaboration with their partners: the City Laval, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM)the Société de transport de Laval (STL), exo as well as the various boroughs served.
