Being a leader in sustainable mobility
As a public transit provider, the STM is a natural ally in the fight against climate change. Electrifying our bus network is in line with our commitment to do even more and is an integral part of our 2030 Strategic Organizational Plan (2030 SOP - in french only).
Quick updates
Our bus fleet electrification has been in the works for a long time, and we’re giving it the thought and preparation it deserves.
Since 2016, we’ve integrated hybrid and electric buses into our network, carried out studies and research abroad, and tested different ways to reach our goal.
We’ve developed a solid, research‑based plan for 2025-2026 and are now putting it into action to get ready for our new electric buses in 2026.

A few years ago, we started making the shift toward hybrid technology by acquiring buses that emit 30% fewer greenhouse gases than diesel buses. At the same time, we ran tests to find the most suitable configurations and charging options for electric buses in order to best meet the full range of public transit needs.

We currently have more than 871 hybrid buses in service.
Did you know? 49 % of the buses in our fleet are either hybrid or electric.
