    Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the reduced student fare?

Users eligible for the student fare are students who are registered full-time in an educational institution recognized by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES) regardless of their age. Those students will be able to travel at the applicable reduced student fare.

If you have questions about your full-time student status, contact your educational institution, as it is your institution that establishes your status.

Is there a deadline to procure the reduced student fare photo OPUS card?

There is no deadline. If you already have a reduced fare OPUS card, it will expire on the date mentioned on the card. It is still possible to have your card issued after that date, but you will not longer be entitled to the reduced fare until you can make a new request for a card.

Please note that you may obtain or renew your student OPUS card as of August 1 to avoid the fall lineups. Renew your card between August 1 and October 31 so you do not lose a month of your student status.

After October 31, you may still obtain your card, but you will not be eligible for the reduced fare until you submit a new application. Also bear in mind that your student status will be valid for a shorter time period, as student OPUS cards expire on
    October 31.

I am currently considered to be a part-time student for the fall term, but full-time for the winter term. Can I obtain the reduced rate right away?

No, at the time of the application, the student must be enrolled full-time.

I am a part-time student at two different academic institutions.

If you are a part-time student at two different institutions, you must present two documents proving part-time student status, which include the credits for each course or total number of credits per institution, the registrar’s signature and the school’s seal. The total number of credits must be the equivalent of a full-time status. You can then be considered a full-time student and will be eligible for the photo OPUS card.

I am a full-time student and I would like to know if I can show up soon with my fall school schedule as proof of student status to obtain the reduced fare OPUS card.

The schedule is not accepted as proof of school enrollment.

Two options are available to you:

    - You can refer to your age category section on this website (stm.info/opusetudiants) to to obtain the form 'Application for OPUS card with photo'. No photocopies are accepted and form must not be dated by over one month.

    - Or, If your school is listed as an Academic institution with online document service, the documents you need are available through your school’s portal. You can go directly to the Photo studio and from there access your school’s intranet using your tablet, smart phone, or use an ipad made available to you;  in order to provide us with school form attesting to your full-time student status. No paper version is accepted.

Can I obtain the photo OPUS card at the studio, upon presentation of my student card only (in replacement of the form)?

No. The form is compulsory if you are age 16 and over. You can fill the form Application for OPUS card with photo on this website. Refer to your age category section to find it.

NB .: Student ID card is NOT an accepted piece of ID.

If my school enrollment certificate is available online, must I also have the STM form stamped by my school?

No, a stamp or seal is not necessary. However, in addition to the online certificate, please complete only the “To be filled out by applicant” and “Mandatory signature” sections of the photo OPUS card application form. This authorizes the transmission of your personal data for the issuing of the reduced-fare OPUS card.

Go to one of our Espace client and bring a photo ID card, so you can get a new OPUS card loaded with any remaining fares from the old one.You will only need to pay an OPUS card replacement fee.

If you applied online through your institution’s intranet portal, you cannot submit another online application. You must go to an Espace client or the photo studio.

Is it possible to renew my OPUS student card at a point of service?

No. The renewal can be done only either :

    - Online for students at participating institutions.

    - During the visit of the STM photographer if your institution offers it .Click here to to see if your school takes part in the OPUS Tour and mark your calendar.

    - At the Photo Studio located in the bus terminal (1717 Berri, near Ontario).

I missed the photographer’s visit to my school. Where can I renew my card?

At the Photo Studio. See the section on your age group to find out which documents you need to obtain your card.

Can I have a new OPUS card issued during the STM photographer’s visit to my educational institution, or is this only to renew the OPUS card?

Yes. The school visit allows a new OPUS card to be renewed or issued.

My school isn’t part of the OPUS card renewal STM photographer’s visit. Is it possible to do this at another school near me?

No. Each institution structures the photographer’s visit according to its own students and group schedules and does not accept students from another institution.

When the STM photographer visited my school,  I received a new card. Can I transfer the trips from the old photo OPUS card to the new one so I don’t lose them?

Yes. During the OPUS Tour at your shool, the trips remaining on your old card will be transfered on your new photo OPUS card, except if there is a technical problem.
In such a case, keep your old photo OPUS card and go to one of the Customer centres.

N.B.: If your old OPUS card is at the regular fare (WITHOUT photo), keep it and use it until the fares run out, parallel to your new photo OPUS card.
