Controlled microblasting excavation work

Microblasting excavation work began in September 2025 at the Provencher auxiliary building site. For more information, see the Microblasting section further down this page.

In spring 2025, construction of a new auxiliary building began at the intersection of Jean-Talon and Provencher streets. In order to complete the various stages of the project, the work will be spread out over several years.

  • The sidewalk on the west side of Provencher Boulevard as well as the north sidewalk of Jean-Talon Street facing the worksite remain accessible.
  • Flaggers are present at the site entrance and exit to ensure pedestrian safety.
  • Be vigilant and make sure you cross at the traffic signals, use pedestrian crossings and comply with all instructions issued by traffic controllers.

Join your local good neighbour committee!

Do you live near the future Vertières station or Provencher auxiliary building and want to have your say in how the Blueline project worksites will fit into your neighbourhood?

A good neighbor committee has been set up as a space for dialogue between the Blue line extension project team and the local community. We’re currently looking for people who live in the area to complete the committee and represent local residents at a few meetings per year.

Write to us to apply or to find out more.

Microblasting

Controlled microblasting excavation at the future Provencher auxiliary building began in September 2025. We will use this proven technique since it is an effective method for excavating on a small site like this one.Occasional vibrations may be felt by residents near the worksite.

An independent consulting firm carried out surveys (especially photographs) on all buildings around the worksite. These inspections document the condition of the buildings before construction. In the unlikely event that any damage is reported, an expert opinion will help to determine whether the damage is the result of the vibrations produced by the worksite. Property owners affected by this measure have been contacted before the start of microblasting work.

Carbon monoxide detectors were also distributed to properties within a 100-meter radius of the worksite.

  • The worksite of the auxiliary building is partitioned off, and the microblasting is done within the construction zone.
  • Safety instructions are posted around the site.
  • Blasting mats are installed over the rock to contain the micro-blasts.
  • No explosives are stored on site.
  • We’ve hired a specialized firm to monitor the vibrations and ensure compliance with the City of Montréal’s standards.

  3. Microblast
  4. 1 long whistle or siren sound
  5. End of microblasting

The controlled microblasting excavation work began in September 2025 and will continue through spring 2026. There will be an average of 1 to 2 microblasts per week.

For safety reasons, during each microblasting operation, a restricted area around the site will be temporarily closed to traffic, for a period of about 10 minutes. Employees will be present to coordinate this maneuver.

Learn more about the project

An auxiliary building is a service building, closed to the public and located between two métro stations, that houses a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment needed for métro operations. This includes ventilation equipment, power supply infrastructure and pumps to remove runoff water. There are currently hundreds of these buildings in the métro network.
