Public information meeting

Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough residents are invited to take part in a public information meeting about the project to rebuild Complexe Crémazie. That infrastructure is located at the intersection of Saint-Laurent and Crémazie Ouest boulevards.

This summer, STM starts rebuilding its Complexe Crémazie, thereby replacing the vast maintenance shops originally built in 1948. Standing at the intersection of Saint-Laurent and Crémazie boulevards, the facility’s concept will take into account future requirements related to new hybrid and electric bus technologies. The multi-purpose building will give STM the flexibility needed to bring our production methods in line with the industry’s best practices.

The building itself is at the end of its service life. Rebuilding from the ground up will meet current maintenance needs and space requirements related to the growing numbers of buses in STM’s fleet.

  • Sectors involving production, machining and tool-making are kept together in a row to optimize the transportation and supply of materials.
  • Administrative offices are also located together, keeping walking distances to a minimum and fostering closer cooperation at work.   
  • The section in charge of refurbishing bus components will bring in those in charge of repairing and reconditioning spare parts. 
  • Units handling small components, body work, upholstery and seats are housed on the ground floor.
  • A central aisle promotes efficient circulation for employees and transportation of materials.  
  • The bus mechanical maintenance area is crucial to our operations. In updating that work area, the space between lifting jacks will be wider. The height in that area will make it possible to include two jacks with overhead walkways used for working on the roof of hybrid and electric buses. 
  • Indoor parking spaces are set aside for bus maintenance in winter, making such work easier.
  • The unit in charge of distribution will centralize the activities of STMs’ three main stockrooms in a single location.
  • Lastly, all training will be dispensed in a single training centre, next to a métro station.

Bringing together several teams and centralizing their activities, the new Complexe Crémazie will not only lead to a significant improvement in efficiency, but to a better quality of life, in light of the principles of sustainability it embraces. It truly expresses our vision for seamlessly blending our operations into an urban environment.

On-site construction work will extend from summer 2017 into 2021.

From summer 2017 to 2018

The building facades on the Saint-Laurent and Crémazie sides will be demolished.

In 2019

The bus mechanical maintenance area will be outfitted, along with the space set aside for the training centre.

From 2020 to 2021

That last phase will mainly serve to connect the new buildings and finish outfitting the distribution centre and maintenance workshops.

Work will be executed in three phases:

From summer 2017 to 2018

The building facades on the Saint-Laurent and Crémazie sides will be demolished.

In 2019

The bus mechanical maintenance area will be outfitted, along with the space set aside for the training centre.

From 2020 to 2021

That last phase will mainly serve to connect the new buildings and finish outfitting the distribution centre and maintenance workshops.

Traffic considerations

We are setting aside space so that trucks can get around on site. All heavy vehicles will enter and leave the construction site by way of Saint-Laurent boulevard.

Some of the traffic will be deviated to the east of the construction site, by way of Henri-Julien, to make it easier to get around the site.

However, only STM cars and small vehicles will use that access, Monday to Friday, from 6 am to 3 pm. 

IMPORTANT

In light of the type of work being planned, we expect its impact on the fluid movement of car traffic will be marginal.

Dust considerations

We will also control dust within the construction zone and on access lanes, by deploying these measures:

  • Installation of dust screens on worksite partition walls
  • Cleaning adjacent streets on a regular basis  
  • Sprinkling water over construction site to lessen dust dispersal

Noise considerations

Every measure will be taken to keep noise to a minimum. Also, a significant portion of construction work will take place inside the walls of the new complex.  

As soon as we start setting up the work site, we will put up a noise abatement wall. We will also ensure we comply with all municipal regulations.

This modern building will feature the best sustainable practices, and for that, we are aiming to obtain a LEED Gold certification. The building complex will include:

  • Highly reflective white rooftops and green roof systems
  • Natural light
  • Universal access
  • A building shell with superior energy efficiency
  • An energy efficient mechanical and heat recovery system
  • Water catchment and recycling
