Montréal, December 6, 2023 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough are announcing the extension of the reserved lane on Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Customers will begin benefitting from the new reserved lane on December 11.
The reserved lane for buses, taxis and bikes will run:
- Southbound between Crémazie Boulevard and Jarry Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Northbound between Molière Street and Bellarmin Street, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“Saint-Laurent Boulevard is an iconic and historic transportation thoroughfare in Montreal,” says Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM Board of Directors. “Its first incarnation was built in 1717 to provide a conduit for north-south traffic flow. Three centuries later, we remain committed to improving this route for public transit customers by ensuring more reliable and comfortable service. There is no doubt that this new section of the reserved lane will encourage local residents to choose public transit—or to start choosing it much more often.”
“When the STM seeks out partners for the deployment of initiatives to improve public transit and better serve the people who use it, we always step forward,” says Laurence Lavigne Lalonde, Mayor of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension. “The reserved lane on Saint-Laurent was no exception. Without rush-hour traffic, bus service becomes more reliable and a better alternative to single-occupant car use. And since bikes are allowed in the reserved lane, it promotes not only sustainable mobility but also soft/active mobility.”
The extension will benefit over 7,300 daily riders of line 55 and better meet travel needs in the coming years. This new reserved lane for buses, taxis and bikes will improve the fluidity, reliability and efficiency of line 55, which departs on average every 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the time of day.
In 2024, another section of reserved lane will be opened between Sauvé and De Beauharnois in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
