In light of the schedule changes taking effect next March 27 for many bus lines, Société de transport de Montréal (STM) wanted to demystify how the offer of bus service is planned. In doing so, it explained the basics of scheduling and how it translates into daily operations. To that point, STM reminds that:

  • 100,000 hours are added to the offer of bus service for 2017, the most added since 2012;
  • Planning bus service is done in a way that keeps rides taken by customers and adjustments made to bus service in balance, by adjusting service in areas most travelled by transit users (sound management);
  • The planning process takes place four times a year;
  • It is an « organic » exercise; even if the planning itself is done six months in advance, service adjustments take place every day;
  • The planning of bus service levels changes according to specific timeframes and cannot be compared to previous year;
  • This method enables STM to optimize its bus service and assign resources to the most appropriate areas.
