Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is pleased to announce that two elevators at Place-d’Armes métro station on the Orange line are now operational, thereby improving the transit experience for customers, especially for those with functional limitations.
« Last week, we presented our new universal access development plan for 2016-2020 in which our commitment to speeding up the process for making métro stations accessible is made clear. Having elevators up and running at Place-d’Armes station is evidence of our commitment. We are improving our installations gradually, so that they best meet the public’s needs, » said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of STM’s board of directors.
«The issue of universal access is of capital importance for Montréal, especially in terms of transportation. This newly accessible station, located so close to Old Montréal, the business district and Chinese district, is very good news for all transit users, particularly for families with young children, and people in a wheelchair. It is one more step toward having a public transit system worthy of a 21st century city », added Aref Salem, in charge of transportation for the City of Montréal’s executive committee.
12 stations are now accessible
This now brings the number of universally accessible stations along the Orange line to 12, with Montmorency, De la Concorde, Cartier, Henri-Bourassa, Berri-UQAM, Lionel-Groulx, Côte-Vertu, Champ-de-Mars, Jean-Talon, Snowdon, Rosemont and now, Place-d’Armes.
Work on the installation of elevators at Honoré-Beaugrand and Du Collège is now underway. More such work is also being planned for Bonaventure station (with work executed by AMT), for Vendôme, Viau and Berri-UQAM stations on the Green line (expected to be operational in 2019), as well as for Mont-Royal station (expected to be operational in 2020).
The STM reminds that, last October, it also announced it would be investing $213 M to make another 14 métro stations universally accessible by 2022, by equipping them with elevators.
Inaugurated in 1966, Place-d’Armes station is used by some 6.3 million passengers each year.
