The STM launches a public consultation on a name for the new métro cars

Press release

Montréal, March 23, 2011   As announced during the unveiling of the exterior look of the new métro cars, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will hold a public consultation from March 28 to April 11 to select a name for them. The Société will call on the creativity of Montrealers to come up with a name that will define this next generation of Montréal métro cars.

“As was the case for the consultation on the exterior appearance of the new rolling stock now bearing the name MPM-10 (for matériel sur pneumatiques de Montréal ordered in 2010), we are hoping through this initiative to continue to engage our employees and our clients as well as to instill in them a feeling of pride. I hope that many people will participate once again in this new consultation to christen the new cars!” declared Mr. Michel Labrecque, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Those wishing to participate in this consultation should simply complete the electronic form available at www.mouvementcollectif.org and www.stm.info by providing their co-ordinates (first name, last name, email address), proposing a name and submitting it online. This name should meet the following criteria:

  • be short, original and have significance
  • be friendly, have a pleasant sound and be easy to remember
  • be linked to sustainable development
  • contain a maximum of 16 characters

A selection committee will analyze all the proposed names and will choose a number of them. A second consultation could then be held to determine a preference among these selected names.

It should be mentioned that more than 30 000 people participated in the consultation on the exterior look of the next generation of Montréal métro cars last December and that the car with a metallic finish gradually turning to blue was the big winner. The exterior design, which expresses the modern aspect of the new cars featuring state-of-the-art technologies successfully proven in other large cities, reflects the following characteristics: a dynamic quality, a sense of flow, a strong and distinctive image as well as a timeless look. As well, these cars will form a train that is open throughout its length thus providing increased passenger capacity and flow.

Throughout the consultation period, the STM will carry out an information campaign directed at its clientele and the general public. Google and certain social networks such as Facebook will be part of the mix. Display advertising is also planned for the bus and métro network, notably on the Métrovision screens on the métro platforms and on the Télécité displays in the métro cars. Information will also be available on the Info STM page in the 24 heures newspaper.

In closing, it should be noted that in 2010 the STM received the award for Outstanding Public Transportation System in North America from the American Public Transportation Association. This award was in recognition of the excellent results it achieved between 2007 and 2009 in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.
