The STM highlights the 150th anniversary
of Chekhov’s birth

Montréal, November 8, 2010
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) extends a warm invitation to its clientele and to all those interested to come and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Russian author Anton Chekhov by attending the performance of a traditional ballet by the Rousskiye Ouzory Dance Company, thanks to the initiative of Théâtre Jean-Duceppe.

This exceptional, free celebration will take place on November 9 at 5:00 p.m. at the Place-des-Arts métro station. In addition to enjoying the performance, those in attendance will be able to participate in a draw for tickets to attend the play La Cerisaie running at Théâtre Jean-Duceppe until December 4.

Because the STM is eager to make the public transit experience a pleasurable one and wants to connect with people, it has, for the past several years, partnered with the cultural community to present quality shows. It wishes to make these shows accessible to the greatest number of people by offering them a free cultural space in a location that is highly frequented, particularly by public transit users.

The works of Chekhov, presented around the world, still resonate with audiences today. What a good reason to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth, and the Place-des-Arts station is where it’s happening. The Société hopes that many people will respond to its invitation to attend this wonderful artistic event so rarely presented in a setting such as this.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the STM, a public transit government business enterprise, received the 2010 award for outstanding public transport system in North America awarded by the American Public Transportation Association. This award was in recognition of the excellent results it achieved between 2007 and 2009 in the areas of effectiveness and efficiency.
