The STCUM is Launching the Assistance Project
For an Increased Feeling of Safety in the Métro

Montréal, May 30, 1997 - To meet the expectations of its ridership and in order to increase the feeling of safety in the métro, the STCUM has revised the displayed instructions concept of its safety equipment. For the past several days, posters showing a hand symbol under the word ASSISTANCE have been put up in the cars and emergency niches located on the platforms. Their blue colour make them more visible, they contain more information and are more attractive.

In the course of consultations held with different groups, the STCUM realized that its customers had little knowledge of the métro safety equipment and that an even higher number didn't know how to use it. Indeed, the emergency niche S.O.S. in which there is a red telephone, an extinguisher and a power breaker is considered by the ridership as being for the exclusive use of STCUM personnel and not as safety equipment put at its disposal. Inside the cars, the intercom to communicate with the train operator and the four braking command levers in case of emergency are also just as foreign to the commuting public.

These posters will be gradually put up until September 1997. In addition to increasing the feeling of safety, this measure allows the STCUM to reaffirm the commitment of its personnel to establishing a helping relationship with its customers and offering a service that is more personalised.
