ATUQ rewards STM for its approach to sustainability!

With representatives from every Québec public transit provider in attendance at ATUQ’s annual Gala, the STM received a special mention for sustainable development (SD) for 2016!

This SD endorsement takes on a special meaning as it does not concern a specific project, but rather the STM’s entire approach to sustainable development. This commendation serves to recognize the efforts deployed by STM’s executive management team and employees since 2007, turning the company’s commitment to making sustainability a key factor in all decisions into a tangible reality.

The numerous measures that were subsequently integrated into our operations and projects have resulted in a significant improvement of our environmental, social and economic performance. The approach taken consisted of targeting existing decision-making processes and building in an SD component aiming for accountability from both managers and employees.

For example, the STM integrated SD in a variety of administrative processes: prioritizing projects of over $1 M (GPP), design standards and criteria (NCC), tenders for goods and services, and authorizations from the Board of Directors.

In tangible terms, this approach has significantly helped improve our SD results, particularly:

  • Reducing GHGs per passenger-km by 13% since 2006
  • A 64% rate of reclaimed residual matter in 2015
  • 69% of trips taken using electricity in 2015
  • Stinson bus garage certified LEED Gold
