Montréal, March 4, 2015 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is set to undertake major refurbishing work at Beaubien métro station this spring, which will require the complete closing of the station from May 4 to August 30, 2015, inclusively. Indeed, at its last public meeting, the board of directors awarded a contract to Groupe Axino inc. who will act as the general contractor in charge of all work.

With a price tag of $3.6 M, of which 75% is financed by Transports Québec as part of STM’s Réno-Infrastructures program, the work will consist mainly in:

- refurbishing of structural slabs, floor finishes and the entrance building’s water-proofing membrane;

- installing a new natural ventilation shaft;
- replacing the lighting fixtures in the entrance building and inside the station, and perform other electrical work;
- replacing the granite stairs;
- repairing and/or replacing wall panels and floor slabs on train platforms;
- upgrading the outdoor marquee;
- replacing walkway edges, sidewalks, pivoting butterfly-type entrance doors and fences;
- adding trees and shrubs.

Although the station is slated to reopen at the end of August, work will continue until January 2016.

Proven mitigation measures
While the station’s entrance building is temporarily closed, mitigation measures will be implemented, including a bus shuttle service running from Beaubien station to Jean-Talon and Rosemont stations, with 2 to 6-minute intervals during rush hour and minimum 10-minute intervals the rest of the time, during the métro’s normal operating hours.

This is not the first time such a project is undertaken by the STM. Over the past few years, Jolicoeur (2013), Villa-Maria (2011), Côte-Sainte-Catherine (2010), Charlevoix (2009) and George-Vanier (2008) stations were also temporarily closed while extensive work was performed.

The mitigation measures being deployed are efficient and have a proven track record. For example, when Jolicoeur station was shut down, the STM still obtained very high satisfaction levels regarding the information provided to transit users:
- 97% felt the information campaign about the station closing was clear
- 96% felt the information campaign about the provided shuttle service was clear
- 94% felt they were informed well in advance of the station closing
- 89% felt they were informed well in advance of the provided shuttle service

It is worth noting that Beaubien station first opened in October 1966 and that 3.6 million passengers transit through it each year.
