Montréal, May 16, 2012 – Following a public consultation, the STM is today announcing that the name Azur was chosen by the public for the new métro cars. By definition, Azur is evocative of the intense shade of clear blue that best describes the characteristic colour of the Montréal métro. The name Azur also meets the criteria initially set by the STM, as it wanted a short, significant and easy-to-remember name.
Replacing métro cars is a project of considerable importance for the STM and, as such, participation by the general public, as well as by STM employees and those of the Bombardier-Alstom consortium throughout the numerous phases of the project leading to the rolling stock’s introduction into passenger service in 2014 was a given from the start. Indeed, nearly 10,000 people cast their vote on the final selection for a name by voting online on the STM website. The general public is also invited to visit the full scale model on display at Berri-UQAM station from next June 8 to July 8.
Following a first round of consultations, more than 6000 names were submitted by the public. Then, the five most evocative names were pre-selected by the Board of Directors’ Customer service committee. The public was then once again consulted to choose a name among the five finalists. In addition, more than 30,000 people took part in the online consultation about the new cars’ exterior look.
