Making a transfer

Transferring means switching from one line to another or from one mode of transportation to another during the same trip. Transfers can be made on the bus, métro, train, and REM.

Once you validate your fare, you have 120 minutes to make any transfers needed to complete your trip. If you’re using an OPUS or Occasional smart card, valid transfers will register automatically when you tap your card. If you’re using a magnetic fare card, the validation date and time will be stamped on the back.

When you can’t make a transfer

In some cases, you’ll need to buy another fare to complete your trip:

  • Round trips on the same bus or métro line: For example, if you take the 45 Papineau northbound, get off, and later take the 45 Papineau southbound.
  • Interrupted métro trips: For example, if you take the Orange line toward Côte-Vertu, get off, walk between two stations, and then get back on the Orange line still heading toward Côte-Vertu.
