Exchanges and refunds

Changed your mind? Here’s when and how you can get a refund or exchange your fare.

Publication date: August 26, 2026

Key points

  • You can exchange an unvalidated (unused) fare for one of greater value by paying the difference.
  • You cannot exchange a fare for one of lesser value, no exceptions.
  • Refunds are available for any unvalidated fare, except 1 trip fares and Group Fares.

If your OPUS card is registered, you’ll need to show ID and your sales receipt

Exchanges

To exchange a fare, speak to a métro station agent.

Monthly passes

You can only exchange a monthly pass for another monthly pass of greater value (valid in more fare zones).

Expired, unvalidated Occasional or magnetic cards

You can exchange an expired, unvalidated Occasional or magnetic fare card for the same fare.

Can’t go in person?

If you need to exchange a fare but can’t go in person, you can ask a friend or family member to go for you. Just print and fill out a proxy form. This option is only available for registered OPUS cards. All photo OPUS cards are registered.

Refunds

How to get a refund for a fare on an OPUS card:

  • Unregistered card: Show the sales receipt.
  • Registered card: Show ID and the sales receipt.

The OPUS card issuance fee is non-refundable.

Weekly, monthly, and 4-month passes

  • Weekly: You can get a refund after the validity period has started, if it hasn’t been used yet.
  • Monthly: You can get a refund after the validity period has started, within six days of purchasing the pass.
  • 4-month: If you’ve used the pass during one or more months of the validity period, you can get a refund up until the first day of the remaining unused month(s). The refund amount will be prorated based on the number of full, unused months.

Free courtesy and event fares

If you received a free courtesy or event fare, it’s not eligible for refund.
