The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and the Syndicat mixte des
transports pour le Rhône et l’agglomération lyonnaise (SYTRAL) are pleased to invite you to
attend the "Urban road and public transit: Who must pay?"
conference that will be held in Montréal, October 7 and 8, 2004, as
part of the XVIIth
Entretiens Jacques Cartier. The conference will provide a forum
of discussion regarding the necessity of establishing efficient,
performance-driven public transit services and of supporting them with
reliable, adequate funding.
Everyone acknowledges public transit’s contribution to
economic growth and social development. Everyone agrees that public
transit is the obvious solution to helping society resolve its
environmental problems and road congestion. But when faced with the
question of who should pay, the answer is not as clear.
During the conference, we will discuss public transit
issues and address them from these four angles: planning, cost
recovery, government jurisdiction and its agencies, and transit
network management. We will also take this opportunity to review some
bold and original experiences carried out in London, Paris, Stockholm
and Vancouver, among others.
Next October 7 and 8, you are invited to come and meet
with scientists and decision-makers from around the world whose
actions and opinions have had a determining impact. It is an honour to
welcome these leaders who will be sharing their vision of public
tranportation for today and the future. Montréal, city of public
transit, welcomes you!
