Preventative closure of two lanes on the Champlain Bridge: STM ready to welcome additional passengers

Communiqué

In light of the preventative closure of two lanes on the Champlain Bridge, the Société de transport de Montréal will be implementing new measures as of Monday to respond to the increase in ridership primarily due to the diversion of certain Conseils intermunicipaux de transport (CIT) buses travelling to the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke station.

Montréal, November 23, 2013 – In light of the preventative closure of two lanes on the Champlain Bridge, the Société de transport de Montréal will be implementing new measures as of Monday to respond to the increase in ridership primarily due to the diversion of certain Conseils intermunicipaux de transport (CIT) buses travelling to the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke station.

To that end, a nine-car train will be added on the métro’s Yellow line, bringing to five the number of trains in operation. This measure will increase passenger capacity by 50% in comparison with the usual service level. Service during rush hour will be equivalent to the service provided for the Grand Prix du Canada.

In addition, the STM will honour transit fares for diverted CIT buses at the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke and Bonaventure stations so as to ease travel for customers as much as possible.

These measures will be in effect throughout the period that work is being carried out on the Champlain Bridge. However, the method of honouring the transit fares for diverted CIT buses might have to change. We suggest that CIT clients stay in contact with their transit companies regarding future developments.
