The STM invites owners of older cars to join the movement!

Montréal, June 16, 200
9 As part of a joint press conference held this morning with the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution (AQLPA) and other partners, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced that, for a sixth year, it would take part in Clear the Air ! , the Old, Highly-Polluting Vehicle Scrappage Program in Québec. The STM, along with other public transit organizations, will offer three months of free public transit use to anyone donating their pre-1995 vehicle to the Association.

“According to AQLPA, older vehicles only account for 10% of the car population, yet they are also responsible for 50% of polluting emissions from all vehicles. We know that public transit use is one of the most efficient ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by transportation, ” declared STM Planning, Marketing and Communications Executive Director, Denise Vaillancourt.

“Therefore, because the STM feels it plays a leading role in terms of sustainable development in the Montréal area, it is intent on promoting the use of sustainable modes of transportation by all available means, including partnerships such as the one with AQLPA,” added Mrs. Vaillancourt.

Indeed, the STM recently unveiled its corporate position aimed at encouraging greater public transit use among the population, either on a regular or occasional basis.

“By taking part in the Clear the Air ! program, the STM is taking yet another eco-responsible action and invites people to do the same by joining the movement. Doing one’s share for the environment by choosing public transportation has never been easier,” concluded Mrs. Vaillancourt.
