The Funambus is a bus
transformed into a reception, exhibition and promotional space for the STM’s
environmental endeavours. This bus, which was headed for the scrap yard, has
been transformed by artist Vincent Vandenbrouck and his team, consisting of,
among others, Sebastien Bire, Veronique Paradis, Etienne Jongen and Mario
Lambert, who carried out this re-purposing project. This STM initiative ties
in directly with its commitment to sustainable development, with the Funambus being constructed primarily from recycled materials.
The bus is equipped with solar panels that
supply lighting and a large display panel made from old bus destination
signs. The Funambus also features a large terrace that can be set up to
enable festival goers to enjoy shows while comfortably seated on recycled
bus seats. Inside the Funambus are tables made from bus support poles, bus
destination signs transformed into communication spaces and bus seats
modified into a swing. Artist Vincent Vandebrouck is well-known for his
environmental and sustainable development creations, including Espace Sedna
in the Old Port, which also used certain recycled materials from the métro.
In relation to this project, the STM would like
to thank la TOHU who made space available for the artists, enabling them to
transform a city bus into Funambus.
This STM initiative is fully in keeping with its
desire to be more visible at major Montréal events in order to promote the
use of public transit as well as its efforts in the area of sustainable
development.
