Pie-IX BRT : Project Construction phase begins March 18

Press release

Having begun preparatory electrical and telecommunication infrastructure work last November, the Pie-IX BRT project will continue with the start of construction and development work on the boulevard’s west side, between D’Amos Street and Pierre-De Coubertin Avenue.

More specifically, the work, which will start on March 18 and go until December, will include:

  • Replacement of sewer, aqueduct and gas conduits
  • Construction of electrical infrastructure
  • Refurbishment of the road
  • Refurbishment of sidewalks
  • Replacement of lighting
  • Improvement of landscaping design

Obstructions

The work will result in the complete closure of three of Pie-IX Boulevard’s six lanes on the west side. Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane will remain open on the boulevard’s east side.

Bus detours will also be in place for the STM’s 41, 139 and 439 lines (northbound only) to avoid disrupting traffic on Pie-IX Boulevard. The buses will be rerouted onto various neighbouring streets.

Work schedule

Work will begin on the east side of the boulevard in spring 2020 and on the central median and BRT stations in 2021. In 2022, the project’s last phase will involve final asphalting and the testing and implementation of the BRT in the fall.

Project summary

Financed by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the City of Montréal and the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ), the project aims to implement a new public transportation service, upgrade municipal infrastructure and improve public property design on Pie-IX Boulevard.

The Pie-IX BRT will have 17 stations (15 in Montréal and two in Laval), spread out over 11 kilometres of Pie-IX Boulevard between Saint-Martin Boulevard in Laval and Pierre-De Coubertin Avenue in Montréal. When completed, it will serve more than 70,000 customers a day thanks to the implementation of three STM lines, two Société de transport de Laval lines and one exo line.

The total cost of the project’s public transportation component is estimated at $393.8 million, with $364.2 million for infrastructure and $29.6 million for the acquisition of additional buses required by the Montréal and Laval transportation authorities. The project is financed 75% by the MTQ and 25% by the ARTM. For the municipal infrastructure component, the City of Montréal invested an extra $131.3 million for the redevelopment of Pie-IX Boulevard.
