QUÉBEC AND SOCIÉTÉ DE TRANSPORT DE MONTRÉAL ANNOUNCE THE COMMISSIONING OF 100% ELECTRIC BUSES, IN THE CONTEXT OF CITY MOBILITY

Montréal, May 23, 2017 — Effective tomorrow, buses completely powered by electricity will begin serving customers in Montréal. Under the City Mobility project, three buses will go into operation so that the observations of the technology under real operating conditions can continue. These vehicles were acquired by Société de transport de Montréal (STM) under a financial commitment of $11.9 million from the Gouvernement du Québec, coming from the Green Fund. This project arises from the 2015-2020 Transportation Electrification Action Plan.

The Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transport Electrification, Mr. Laurent Lessard, the Minister of Sustainable Development, the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, Mr. David Heurtel, the Mayor of Montréal, Mr. Denis Coderre, and the Chair of the Board of Directors of Société de transport de Montréal, Mr. Philippe Schnobb, made the announcement today.

Nova Bus, which designed these buses, a member of the Volvo Group based in Saint-Eustache, will accompany and provide technical support to the STM throughout the evaluation of the project.

Highlights

The City Mobility project

• is an initiative of Volvo and its North American division, Nova Bus;
• is deployed in several cities; Montréal is the first North American city to participate;
• seeks to make Montréal a demonstration showcase for technologies associated with electromobility by bringing together the key players in the sustainable mobility sector, both private and public;
• includes the installation of two conductive quick charging stations to put three 100% electric Nova Bus buses into service on line 36-Monk.

The 2015-2020 Transportation Electrification Action Plan has the following targets

• the achievement of an objective of 100,000 rechargeable electric and hybrid vehicles registered in Québec;
• the reduction of 150,000 tonnes per year of greenhouse gas emissions produced by transportation, thus contributing to Québec’s objectives of fighting climate change and improving air quality;
• the reduction of 66 million  litres of fuel consumed annually in Québec;
• 5,000 jobs in the electric vehicle industry and total investments of around $500 million.

The Green Fund

• The Green Fund, which mainly derives its income from the carbon market, funds the measures of the 2013-2020 Climate Change Action Plan, which break down into more than 150 actions in the key sectors of the Québec economy, including transportation. In particular, this plan seeks to support public transit and active transportation, energy efficiency and technological innovation in every transportation mode. The Green Fund contributes nearly $255 million over five years to the implementation of the 2015-2020 Transportation Electrification Action Plan, accounting for 60% of its total budget.
